Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies: Fun Cookie Recipe for Kids and Families

Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies are a fun variation of traditional thumbprint cookies.

They’re a perfect Christmas cookie recipe because …

  • Kids love to roll the dough and press the wells
  • Powdered sugar and glazed cherries look festive
  • Chocolate is always a favorite
  • The cookies are easy to make!

Make sure you allow cookies to cool on baking sheets for several minutes to set before transferring them to a cooling rack.

Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies from The Cookie Elf

Prep time: 20-30 minutes

Bake time: 10 minutes

Makes about 3-4 dozen cookies

Ingredients

6 tablespoons butter, melted

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

¾ cup granulated sugar

½ cup cocoa powder

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup each granulated sugar and powdered sugar for rolling cookies

Glazed cherries

Directions for Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 325ºF. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Set baking sheets aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine flour, ¾ cup granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Using an electric mixer on low speed, mix in melted butter and eggs, scraping the bowl continually, about 1-2 minutes. Cover and refrigerate the cookie dough for about 30 minutes.
  3. Place granulated sugar and powdered sugar in two separate small bowls.
  4. Scoop dough into large, marble-sized balls about 1 inch in diameter. Roll balls in between the palms of your hands until smooth. Roll balls first in granulated sugar and then powdered sugar. Set the balls onto prepared baking pan, about 2 inches apart.
  5. Press your thumb or knuckle in the center of each ball, leaving a small well. Press a glazed cherry into each well.
  6. Bake cookies for about minutes until they are puffed and slightly cracked. Remove baking sheets from the oven. Let cookies cool for a couple of minutes on baking sheets before using a spatula to remove them from the sheet to a cooling rack.
  7. Allow cookies to cool completely. Store in an airtight container with waxed paper in between layers.

Special Baking Tips for Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies

Don’t neglect rolling the cookies in the granulated sugar first. The granulated sugar layer allows the powdered sugar to adhere to the cookie (rather than be absorbed) and give the cookie its white layer.

You may wish to use the glazed cherry to press its own well directly into each cookie. This way the wells won’t be too big for the cherries.
