Nutella Crunch Brownies:
Brownie Recipe

Nutella Crunch Brownies are made in two layers: The bottom layer is a rich brownie. The top layer is a smooth, luscious combination of chocolate chips and Nutella spread, with crisp rice cereal to give the cookie a light crunch.

Nutella, a chocolate spread, is made from cocoa, hazelnuts, sugar, and additional ingredients. Its smooth texture and distinctive taste help give this recipe’s topping a unique flavor.

Nutella Crunch Brownies

Prep time: 15 minutes

Bake time: 30-40 minutes

Makes 24-36 bars

Ingredients

Brownie layer

5 ounces unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled

¾ cup (1 ½ sticks) butter or margarine, softened

1 ¾ cups granulated sugar

3 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

Topping

1 ½ cups (10 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 cup Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread

1 tablespoon butter or margarine

1 ½ cups crispy rice cereal, like Rice Krispies

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350º F (325º F for a glass dish). Line a 13 x 9 baking pan with foil and spray lightly with nonstick vegetable spray.

  • Make the brownie layer: in a medium bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed, combine melted chocolate and butter. Cream until smooth. Add sugar and beat until well blended. Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla extract. Mix until well blended. Add flour, a bit at a time, scraping the bowl constantly until well combined. Pour mixture into prepared pan and spread it evenly.

  • Bake for 30-40 minutes or until edges appear to be set. The center should still be soft. Do not overbake.

  • Prepare the topping: while brownie layer is baking, prepare the topping. In a medium saucepan on low heat, combine chocolate chips, Nutella, and butter. Stir constantly until ingredients are melted and combined together. Remove saucepan from the heat.

  • Five minutes before brownies are done baking, add rice cereal to topping. Mix well until the cereal is coated.

  • Remove the pan from the oven. Spread the topping evenly over the brownies while they are hot. Allow brownies to cool completely on a wire rack. Refrigerate brownies until topping is set. Cut into bars.

  • Store bars loosely covered at room temperature with wax paper in between layers.

A Special Baking Tip from The Elf

As you prepare Nutella Crunch Brownies, you may choose to melt the chocolate chips, Nutella, and butter in the microwave, rather than on the stove top. To do so, set ingredients in a microwave-safe dish. Cook for 20-30 seconds on high. Stir the mixture. Repeat the process until the ingredients have melted and are thoroughly mixed together. Do not overcook. Remove dish from microwave before you add rice cereal.
